The BMW M5 is the high-performance version of the BMW 5 Series, produced since 1984. The E34 M5, designed by Ulf Weidhase under Ercole Spada and J Mays, served as the third generation of the M5, powered by a 3.5L S38B36 inline-6 before being upgraded to the 3.8L S38B38 inline-6 in 1991. Initially produced only in a sedan body style with a station wagon later following, the M5 body shells were produced at Dingolfing before being shipped to Garching for hand assembly. 12,254 were produced.
