It is based on a real-life customized 1957 Chevy designed by Thom Taylor at Boyd Coddington's custom shop, it was made for drag racer Joe Hrudka who is the founder and CEO of Mr. Gasket performance parts. The Hot Wheels version was released five times before being discontinued.
