In the early years of the Pro Racing line, Hot Wheels wanted to create a line that focused on another popular line of racing, Indy Car Racing. As usual in the Pro Racing line they create a Premium Version of a car for adult collectors to showcase, and a Basic Version of the same car that was modified to be lighter, cheaper, and work well on tracks. Out of all the Indy cars used in the Pro Racing line, the Reynard 97I was the only Indy car to have both a Premium and Basic Version.
